A downloadable game for Windows and macOS

"Go To Sea" is a retro pixel narrative game that immerses players in the transformative era of 1990s China, a period characterized by rapid privatization and modernization. Set in a northern Chinese industrial town, the game centers around the story of Xiao Kang, a young man employed at a neighborhood bathhouse. This communal space acts as a nexus for local residents to congregate, share stories, and exchange information, gradually influencing Xiao Kang's thoughts and worldview.

Inspired by the personal experiences of the game's creators, who spent their formative years in small cities across mainland China during the late 80s and early 90s, "Go To Sea" endeavors to encapsulate the essence of the "run to Xiaokang" – the pursuit of a Moderately Prosperous Society. This concept, initially proposed in 1979, envisioned a society with a thriving middle class, but it also gave rise to internal conflicts and emotional deprivation amidst the backdrop of material abundance.

Through a genre-crossing narrative woven with loosely connected scenes, "Go To Sea" intertwines the independent yet interconnected storylines of multiple characters. The game meticulously recreates the familiar streets, food stalls, TV channels, and books that shaped the creators' shared collective memories and the experiences of those around them. By presenting players with a relatable yet thought-provoking journey, "Go To Sea" delves into the challenges and struggles individuals face as they navigate the unprecedented forces of modernization in China.
